Open when letters for a long distance relationship
By Luan Alves · Updated
Open when letters work best in a long distance relationship when they cover the hard gaps between visits: the first night after a goodbye, a bad day with no one to hug and a night you can’t call because of the time difference. Write five to eight, one for each of those moments, and add a voice note to the ones that need your voice most.
The letters to write before you leave
Start with the moments that hurt most in long distance, not the ones that sound nicest. These eight cover a typical stretch between visits.
For our first night apart
The airport goodbye is the worst part. Have this one waiting that night.
For when you miss me
The one they’ll open first and most. Keep it warm and specific.
For when we can’t call
Busy weeks and time zones happen. Tell them it’s not about them.
For when you’re having a bad day
Take their side, no details needed, and give them permission to rest.
For when you can’t sleep
Short, slow and calm. A voice note helps most here.
For when you’re jealous or worried
Long distance makes small worries loud. Say what’s true, plainly.
For our anniversary
Set it to open on the day, so it arrives on time even if you can’t call.
For the day I land
The last letter. Short, excited and full of plans for the visit.
How to make them last until the next visit
The goal is a letter for the hard moments, not a letter a day. A few rules keep them from running out early.
Write for moments, not dates.
“For when you miss me” works any week. A letter tied to “day 12” goes stale if plans change.
Date only the days that matter.
Birthdays, anniversaries and the day of the next visit. Everything else can open any time.
Use real details.
Your coffee order, the show you’re halfway through, the street you walked down on the last visit. That’s what makes it yours.
Add your voice to two or three.
Calls are the thing long distance runs short on. A 30-second voice note on the sleepless-night letter is worth more than a page of text.
Don’t promise a daily call.
Promise what you’ll keep, like “I’ll call when I can, and I’ll mean it”.
Questions
- How many open when letters should I write for long distance?
- Five to eight is plenty for a stretch of a few weeks to a few months. More than that, and the letters start to repeat. Fewer than three can feel thin.
- Should I send paper letters or digital ones?
- Paper is lovely if you see each other before the stretch starts and can hand them over. Digital works when you’re already apart, or when you want photos and voice notes in them. Some couples do both.
- What if we’re in different time zones?
- In ForWhen, a letter you set to open on a date opens at midnight in their time zone, not yours. Moment letters can be opened any time.
